Héroux-Devtek Spain (HDS) coordinates NNEOS Project “Nacelle cowl NExt generation Opening System” funded by the European Commission as part of Clean Sky 2 program for R&D activities in the field of “Advanced Engine and Aircraft Configurations” AIRBUS is the Topic Leader of the project providing the requirements of the system. The project started back in October 2019 and will last 3 years.
The main aim of the project is the development and validation of an innovative nacelle cowl opening system based on electromechanical actuation that will allow complete accessibility to the engine and nacelle components and consequently will help to drastically improve maintainability of the whole system. The NNEOS concept will be compact, safe, reliable and easy to operate and will be able to withstand the harsh environmental conditions required such as the high temperature during flight and maintenance operations.
NNEOS project is organized in 8 work packages, involving requirements definition, conceptual and detailed design, manufacturing and assembly of the first prototypes and functional and validation tests. Some of the planned tests are vibration, partial endurance and operational and survival temperature.
During the first year of the project HDS has successfully completed the analysis and definition of the requirements provided by AIRBUS, and the preliminary conceptual design. The main challenge is finding the appropriate components to survive and operate at 250ºC during long periods of time.
Despite the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, HDS will continue working closely with AIRBUS to successfully accomplish the next milestones of the project.
